XML is becoming a de facto standard underlying much of the extra-and intra-company systems integration and collaboration in development today. It allows designers to create their own customized tags, enabling the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations.
It is an Ďopen standardí, in which no one owns the technology. It is platform independent and it isnít married to a particular type of hardware of software. XML Schemas express shared vocabularies by using customized tags and allow machines to carry out rules made by people. They provide a means for defining the structure, content and semantics of XML documents.
The BOB committee is defining XML schemas for the communication of data between gaming machines and back-end systems. This will enable plug and play capability between different vendor's equipment.
For example, the following diagram shows a high-level graphical representation of the Cabinet Accounting schema.
